Chapter 1
Who Am I?
One of the most basic questions a person can ask is WHO am I? The scriptures are very clear on this topic when one searches, cross references, and opens the mind to the bigger picture of life in eternity.
Titus in the New Testament talks of “…eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began.” (Titus 1:2) Promised to whom? Jeremiah was told, “Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.” (Jeremiah 1:5) Abraham had a similar experience as recorded in the Pearl of Great Price:
“And God saw these souls that they were good, and he stood in the midst of them, and he said: These I will make my rulers; for he stood among those that were spirits, and he saw that they were good; and he said unto me: Abraham, thou art one of them; thou wast chosen before thou wast born.” (Abraham 3:23 PGP)
The Old Testament book of Proverbs, chapter 8, describes a similar scenario yet in more detail describing that we were there (as spirits) when the world was being formed:
22 The Lord possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old.
23 I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was.
24 When there were no depths, I was brought forth; when there were no fountains abounding with water.
25 Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth:
26 While as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world.
27 When he prepared the heavens, IÂ was there: when he set a compass upon the face of the depth:
28 When he established the clouds above: when he strengthened the fountains of the deep:
29 When he gave to the sea his decree, that the waters should not pass his commandment: when he appointed the foundations of the earth:
30 Then I was by him, as one brought up with him: and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him;
31 Rejoicing in the habitable part of his earth; and my delights were with the sons of men.
Note verse 30, “Then I was by him, as one brought up with him; and I was daily his delight….” We are the Children of God! He is our Father! Deuteronomy 14:1 states, “Ye are the children of the Lord your God.” Psalms 82:6 also says, “…all of you are children of God.” Malachi asks, “Have we not all one father? Hath not one God created us? (Malachi 2:10) Paul asked the Hebrews, “Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?”(Hebrews 12:9) Doctrine and Covenants 76:24 says “That by him, and through him, and of him, the worlds are and were created, and the inhabitants thereof are begotten sons and daughters unto God.” The definition of “begotten” is to bring a child into existence by the process of reproduction. God is literally the Father of our spirits.
